City Grid Patterns and Street Networks: The Features of Spatial Urban Structures
Abstract
This paper focuses on exploring the intersection of the form and function of urban structures in selected cities, particularly on street networks and space for activities. The two cases illustrate the clear relationship between the wall and floor spatial concepts and the different forms and functional distributions of the city. This paper also provides detailed morphological investigations of the various functional activities of the road networks of the two study sites. The typologies presented in this study could provide valuable support to urban planners and policy makers in preparing practical strategies that fit the complexity of the city's road network, including evacuation plans, the location of traffic signs and traffic signal control.
