Towards the Problem of Building Collapse in Nigeria
Abstract
The incidence of building collapse in Nigeria has become a source of concern to members of the building teams, users of building products, financiers and government, recognizing that it needs to be investigated thoroughly. The aim of the study was to determine the nature, incidence and reasons for continuous construction collapses and provide solutions for improving the future development of Nigerian cities. A questionnaire survey was conducted on target members of the construction team, including architects, structural engineers, contractors, urban and regional planners, building owners, mayors of urban planning authorities, and project managers. The study revealed that the collapse of buildings has a certain technical, material and human resources tone, such as design defects, improper construction methods, use of unsafe materials, a lack of maintenance culture and the non-representation of professionals in the implementation of construction projects. The discussion highlighted the need for coordinated action between government agencies, professional organizations, stakeholders in the industry and civil society to mitigate the risk of collapse and promote sustainable and stable development of Nigerian cities.
